Pyrite has a nickname that has become famous: "the gold of madmen". The gold color of the ore, its metallic luster and its high density make inexperienced prospectors often confuse it with gold. However, pyrite is often associated with gold. The two minerals often form together, and in some deposits, the pyrite contains enough gold included to warrant mining.
