Known as the patron saint of the Americas, the virgin of Guadalupe is a religious and national symbol of the Mexican people. Legend has it that in 1531 she appeared four times to a native Aztec, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City. She invites him to ask the bishop's authorization to build a temple in this same place. The bishop then asks for indisputable proof to justify his decision to his community. During her fourth appearance, the virgin asks Juan Diego to pick flowers from the hill and keep them in her tilma (cloak). Juan Diego picks roses, which normally do not grow in this arid climate. Once in the village, he unfolds the cloak, and, to everyone's surprise, the image of the virgin dressed in a cloak covered in gold appears printede.
