In Greek mythology, Amethystos is the name of a nymph. Dionysus, god of wine and drunkenness desired her, but she wished to remain chaste and refused her advances. The goddess Artemis then transformed Amethystos into hard and cold crystal, thus protecting her from Dionysus' evil intentions. Mad with anger, Dionysus spilled his glass of wine on this crystal. It then took on an intense purple color.
